Incorporated in 2003, and gaining federal nonprofit status in 2006, the Tacoma Pierce County Affordable Housing Consortium (Consortium) now has over 60 organizational and affiliate members. These organizations include a broad spectrum of the community, including nonprofit and for profit developers and operators of affordable housing, government agencies, social service providers, banks and other lenders, architects, engineers, and attorneys. The current Executive Director was hired in February, 2006, and continues to serve as its sole employee. The Consortium provides information on affordable housing issues, activities, and opportunities through their website, in member meetings, and through quarterly forums. In collaboration with sister organizations, they advocate for affordable housing in local, state, and federal venues. Members participate in organized advocacy opportunities such as communicating directly with legislators and serving on official committees and task forces. Their website provides information on housing issues at local, state, and federal levels, including HUD programs, census data, and housing research.
Local advocacy efforts include engagement with the Tacoma City Council and Neighborhoods Housing committee to develop affordable housing policies, serving on the Pierce County Housing Affordability Task Force, and ongoing affordable housing policy discussions with elected officials in 16 cities within the County.
State advocacy efforts are primarily in collaboration with the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance; Consortium members use their close connections to local legislators to advance the statewide agenda each session. The Consortium also collaborates with the National Low Income Housing Coalition on national issues such as the National Housing Trust Fund, and HUD support for housing programs.
